The Company
Transdev Wellington Ltd operates and maintains Wellington’s passenger rail service on behalf of the Greater Wellington Regional Council. This includes operating Metlink’s five-line 154-kilometre (96 mi) Metlink commuter network, fanning north out of Wellington Railway Station, as far as Waikanae in the north and Masterton in the east.
They aim to provide a friendly, reliable and world-class rail service that meets the needs and expectations of current rail users while attracting new users at the same time.
The Challenge
When Transdev won the tender to run the Wellington train network in 2015 they needed to transition of the existing IT operations as well as design and implement an entirely new network.
This had to be designed, developed and delivered within six months so the trains could go live on July 6th 2016.
Our Solution
Charged with designing the network and services, Comans envisioned a future-proof network that would give Transdev Wellington a competitive advantage in the crowded transport industry.
We designed the following:
Dual Fibre Loops (10GB)
Data Centre
Microsoft Infrastructure Services (DNS, DHCP, etc.)
Firewall Cluster with full redundancy
Network routing design with full redundancy
Compute and Storage Design with full redundancy
Voice Solution for all stations
4G Private APN
Ticketing solution for train stations
CCTV System for Wellington Station
Train Management System
Train Operator Management System
Book on and Off system
The Results
Transdev’s new network design enables Wellington Train Network to run in a safe and timely manner despite challenges such as earthquakes.
Today, the network delivers 930,000 trips each month on average.
The future-proof fibre network that we designed is constantly evolving to meet the growing demand for transport in the city.
